Australia's Ex-PM Under Fire Over "Reckless" Anti-Muslim Remarks

(MENAFN) Australia's Muslim community launched a scathing rebuke Wednesday against former Prime Minister Scott Morrison, condemning what they characterized as dangerous Islamophobic messaging that unjustly holds Muslims accountable for violent incidents.

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), the nation's leading representative body for Muslim religious authorities, denounced Morrison's demands for Muslim leaders to pursue "wholesale reform" and accept "accountability and responsibility" for addressing what he termed "political Islam," while suggesting Muslims share culpability for the recent Bondi beach assault. The council branded these statements "reckless, irresponsible, and deeply ill-informed."

"This is not the first time Scott Morrison has made such reckless remarks," ANIC stated, referencing his tenure as prime minister when he issued comparable accusations following the 2018 Bourke Street attack, urging Muslim leaders and communities to be "more proactive" and suggesting they possessed knowledge about radicalization within their ranks.

The council firmly dismissed any notion that Islam or Muslims bear culpability for the Bondi attacks, emphasizing that law enforcement officials have explicitly confirmed the incidents lacked organization, direction, or endorsement from any religious entity.
Morrison delivered his remarks at an Israeli conference and penned an opinion piece for a national daily newspaper advocating for nationally standardized accreditation, regulation, and monitoring of imams and religious institutions, according to media.

The council expressed profound disappointment hearing such rhetoric from a former prime minister, cautioning that imposing collective blame on an entire faith community for individual actions erodes social unity and weaponizes public anxiety for political gain.

ANIC additionally condemned recent statements by Senator Andrew Bragg, asserting they amplified a destructive narrative driving societal fractures.

The council issued warnings that inflammatory language fuels escalating Islamophobic incidents, encompassing verbal harassment, physical violence, and threats targeting mosques and community leaders.
