Microsoft Pledges Major Investment to Expand Australia’s AI Infrastructure
The announcement was made by Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella during a visit to Australia, alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The company described the move as its largest investment in the country to date.
The funding will be directed toward strengthening digital infrastructure, enhancing cybersecurity capabilities, and expanding workforce training programs focused on AI skills.
According to the statement, the investment will significantly scale up Microsoft’s Azure AI supercomputing and cloud systems in Australia. It will also extend the Microsoft-ASD Cyber-Shield program to additional government agencies, deepen cooperation with the Department of Home Affairs on national resilience, and provide AI training to three million Australians.
Prime Minister Albanese said the government aims to ensure that “all Australians benefit from AI,” adding that the country’s national AI strategy focuses on both capturing economic opportunities and managing associated risks.
Nadella said Australia has a “enormous opportunity to translate AI into real economic growth and societal benefit.”
Microsoft also plans to substantially expand its Commercial Cloud and AI and GPU services in the country, targeting growth of more than 140% by the end of 2029.
