Microsoft Unveils Major USD18B AI, Cloud Investment in Australia
The announcement was made by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during a visit to Australia, alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The company described the initiative as its largest investment ever in the country.
The funding package is set to support the expansion of cloud computing systems, AI supercomputing capacity, cyber defense capabilities, and workforce training programs across Australia.
According to the statement, the plan will significantly scale Microsoft’s Azure AI infrastructure, extend cybersecurity collaboration with government agencies, and strengthen national resilience efforts in coordination with the Department of Home Affairs. It also aims to provide AI-related skills training to millions of Australians.
Albanese welcomed the investment, emphasizing that the government’s goal is to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence are widely shared while managing associated risks through its national AI strategy.
Nadella highlighted Australia’s potential to convert AI development into economic growth and broader societal gains, pointing to increasing demand for advanced computing infrastructure.
Microsoft also plans to expand its cloud and AI services in Australia by more than 140% by 2029, further deepening its long-term presence in the country’s technology sector.
The company had previously committed A$5 billion in 2023 toward AI and cybersecurity infrastructure, and recently announced another major expansion plan in Japan as part of its broader global AI investment strategy.
